Anthropic fires at Muse and Dots with Claude Duet agent
Anthropic launched Claude Duet on Wednesday, an Opus 5.5-based agent with its own virtual machine and browser, aimed at Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots. US Pro and Max subscribers get it first.

Event log
- Anthropic launched Claude Duet on Wednesday as a rival to Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots
- The agent runs on the Claude Opus 5.5 model
- Claude Duet uses a virtual machine with a built-in web browser
- It ships as an iOS, Android and web app in research preview, US-only, for Pro and Max subscribers
- Last month Anthropic launched Claude Docs and Slides to compete with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
Anthropic launched Claude Duet on Wednesday, a new AI agent built to compete directly with Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots. The agent runs on the Claude Opus 5.5 model and targets small business owners and professionals who want help with planning, meetings and building web apps, The Verge reports.
The launch is the second salvo in quick succession against Anthropic's larger rivals. Last month the company took aim at Microsoft by introducing Claude Docs and Slides — editing tools built into the Claude interface and positioned against Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
What does Claude Duet actually do?
The agent is designed as a general-purpose assistant for small business owners and other professionals. Anthropic pitches it at users who want help with, in the company's framing, everything from planning and meetings to building web apps.
To deliver on that promise, Claude Duet operates through a virtual machine with a built-in web browser. That architecture lets the agent take actions and interact with the web rather than merely generate text — the defining capability of the agent category it now contests with Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots.
The positioning matters for enterprise buyers. Anthropic is not selling a single-purpose tool; it is selling a horizontal agent aimed at the broad professional market, from solo operators to small firms, and it is stacking that agent on top of its own frontier model rather than a cut-down one. Claude Opus 5.5 is the engine, not a budget variant.
Where and when can you get it?
Availability, at launch, is deliberately narrow:
- A standalone app on iOS and Android
- A web app at claude.ai
- A research preview, currently restricted to US customers
- Access limited to subscribers on the Pro or Max plans
Anthropic has said the agent will roll out to more users in the future, though the company has not published a timetable for the wider release or for availability outside the United States.
What does this change for buyers?
For small business owners already paying for a Claude Pro or Max subscription in the US, the answer is straightforward: they now have a browser-equipped agent included in the deal, and can test it against whatever Muse and Dots offer them today.
For everyone else, the practical question is timing. A research preview confined to one country and two paid tiers is not a deployment decision — it is a wait-and-see. IT leaders outside the US, and organizations on other plans, gain nothing on Wednesday beyond a preview of where the agent market is heading.
What it does signal is the shape of the contest. Anthropic, Meta and OpenAI are now each fielding consumer-adjacent agents built on their flagship models, while Anthropic simultaneously pressures Microsoft on the productivity-suite flank with Docs and Slides. Two fronts, two months, one strategy: expand Claude from a chatbot into a platform.
Whether Claude Duet can actually plan, attend and build at the standard professionals require is a question the research preview will answer — one user at a time, and only in the US for now.
